Visiting Scholars
Please note that due to an increased interest in the Visiting Scholar program, the program budget for this year has already been fully allocated, and the application process is closed for 2024-2025.
Applicant Criteria:
- Hold a full-time permanent academic position at the university level.
- Demonstrate a clear research interest and agenda.
- Have a host faculty member (It is the responsibility of the applicant to secure a host faculty member for support).
Applicant should submit:
- Current CV
- A signed letter from their home institution outlines the anticipated contribution of the visiting scholar and the period for the appointment.
- Submit proof of funding. The proof of funding may come from a university or government organization and should be an official document on institutional letterhead, outlining the source of support.
- Complete the Visiting Scholar Form.

Application Submission:

Applications can be submitted at any time of the year. However, please note that reviews during July and August are at the discretion of the program area coordinators.
Host Faculty Member Responsibilities:
- The host faculty member should submit the visiting scholar's complete application a minimum of 8-12 months before the scholar's anticipated arrival.
- The host faculty member or unit is required to provide a speed code to facilitate the payment of the employer compliance fee of $230.
- The host faculty members have a legal obligation per Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The faculty host must actively engage in the relevant business during the scholar's employment period. The host must remain present at the University, and if absent for an extended period, arrangements should be made for another faculty member to assume the formal responsibility.
- The host faculty members are expected to integrate the visiting scholar into academic life, involving them in various activities beyond research presentations, such as lectures, meetings, social events, and student thesis observations.
How to Start:
- Step 1: Find a host faculty member.
- Step 2: Complete your package and submit it to your host faculty member.

- Step 4: A Letter of Invitation will be composed and sent to the Visiting Scholar for acceptance. After the Letter of Invitation is accepted in writing, it should be submitted to Evangeline Castillo at vangie.castillo@uwo.ca, Education Research Office at edu-researchoffice@uwo.ca, and the host faculty member.
Privileges:
The visiting scholar will be issued a Visiting Scholar Card and will have access to Western libraries.
Visiting Scholar Responsibilities:
- If required, upon arrival, the scholar must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP).
- The scholar is accountable for all expenses related to the visit unless explicitly specified otherwise.
- Scholars are obligated to adhere to Western University's rules and regulations.
- Visitors must comply with all federal and provincial laws, and regulations, as well as university policies and procedures.
- Scholars must adhere to all applicable confidentiality and intellectual property rules.
- Scholars must be fully qualified and have obtained the necessary approvals to conduct the specified research.
