What is the difference between eLIS and WTS?

What is eLIS?

eLearning & Information Services (eLIS) is a specialized IT team dedicated to the Faculty of Education. It focuses on addressing specific technological and instructional design needs that are unique to the faculty's academic and administrative activities. eLIS tailors its services to enhance the educational experience directly within the Faculty of Education, supporting faculty members, staff, and students with customized solutions that include systems administration, web development, instructional design, graphic design, Salesforce management, and helpdesk support.

What is WTS?

Western Technology Services (WTS) is the primary IT unit for the entire campus and provides broad, enterprise-level IT services that support the university's overall infrastructure. WTS is responsible for managing large-scale systems that all parts of the university rely on, such as campus-wide networking, email services, central data storage, security protocols, and the main software licenses. Their role is to ensure that the university's core IT systems operate smoothly and securely, facilitating a stable technology environment for all its users, including students, faculty, and staff across all departments.

What technology can I borrow from eLIS?

eLIS will lend out:

  • Adapters for allowing laptops to connect to classroom projectors (USB-C to HDMI, VGA to HDMI)
  • Zoom Carts for livestreaming and recording events and facilitating Zoom meetings in classrooms without existing conferencing technology
  • Chrome Carts for providing classes with up to 50 Chromebooks

What kind of content can be hosted on eLIS Servers?

eLIS Servers can be used to host website sourced from Western's Cascade CMS. We cannot currently host PHP files or other server-side languages.

What technology is available in meeting rooms?

Every meeting room in the Faculty of Education is equipped with a computer, keyboard, mouse, TV screen, and webcam. Additionally rooms 1010 and 1044 are equipped with OWL3 virtual conferencing technology.

My Nvivo licence expired. How do I renew it?

Please file a ticket in our Education Support Portal to request a new licence.

I am an Associated Person with the Faculty of Education. Do I have access to Microsoft 365?

Associated Person accounts have access to web-based Microsoft 365 applications.

Classroom FAQs

How do I connect my laptop to the classroom projector?

Each classroom podium has an HDMI cable that can be used to connect your personal laptop to the classroom projector. Press the HDMI button on the podium's panel to switch the projector input source to your computer.

I saved content on a classroom computer, how long can I access it for?

Every night the classroom computers are reset to a default state. This removes any saved files. Please ensure that you save any necessary files into your OneDrive or onto a USB key.

How do I file a Education Support Portal ticket?

To file a ticket with eLIS please go to https://edu.uwo.ca/support and click the Submit a Ticket button. Choose the type of request that you would like to make and follow the prompts on screen to submit.

How do I use the Student Printers in rm 1137?

To use the printers in room 1137:

  • Log into the print room computer.
  • Download your file from your email or transfer it onto the computer via a usb key.
  • Open the file in adobe reader or Microsoft word
  • Choose "File" > "Print"
  • If you run into issues, make sure that you have a balance on your paperCut account. See these instructions on adding money to your paperCut account

How do I use OWL3 web conferencing technology?

Follow these instructions to set up and use OWL 3 web conferencing.

  1. Make sure the power adapter of OWL 3 is connected to the power outlet.
  2. Open the video conferencing platform. (Eg. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet).
  3. Simply load up your meeting, it should automatically choose the OWL as the main camera and microphone for meetings.
  4. If not, you can change the settings by: Right click on audio settings (left-bottom on zoom)
    • Microphone: Meeting OWL 3.
    • Speaker: Meeting OWL 3.
    • Video: Meeting OWL 3.
  5. Start your meeting. It's as easy as that - 5 steps and roughly 5 minutes to get your meetings ready.
