Leadership Positions

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is the primary governing body of the EGSA and is composed of elected student representatives. Members of the Executive Committee are accountable to the general membership and are expected to act in the best interests of the graduate student community.

The Executive Committee consists of:

(a) The following Executive Positions

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Mentorship Program Coordinator
  • Robert Macmillan Symposium in Education (RMSE) Chair
  • Indigenous Student Representative

(b) The following Faculty Committee Representatives

  • Faculty Council (FC) / Graduate Faculty Council (GFC) Representatives
  • Research Committee Representatives
  • Equity Committee Representative

Executive Committee members are responsible for:

  • Providing leadership and strategic direction for the EGSA.
  • Representing graduate student interests at Faculty meetings.
  • Managing the EGSA’s finances and resources responsibly.
  • Organizing academic, professional, and social programming.
  • Ensuring transparent communication with the general membership.

All Executive Committee members are required to:

  • Provide regular updates to the general membership.
  • Submit transition reports at the end of their term to ensure continuity.

All Executive Committee members are expected to:

  • Attend and actively participate in all Executive and General Meetings.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and annual goal-setting.
  • Maintain clear, timely communication with the general membership and stakeholders.
  • Uphold principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and professionalism.

Executive Positions

The President shall

  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction.
  • Liaise with the many departments within the Faculty of Education, especially the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and the Graduate Assistants.
  • Ensure EGSA elections are held for the subsequent year.
  • Chair Executive and General Meetings.
  • Update and compile EGSA information.
  • Oversee and support the responsibilities of EGSA position holders.
  • Manage communication, create and organize communications regarding EGSA events and recruitment, post and update information on the EGSA website and social media.
  • Ensure EGSA operates consistently with its governing documents.

The Vice President shall

  • Take minutes at all Executive and General Meetings.
  • Submit minutes to the President for approval and dissemination.
  • Assist the President with liaison tasks and communication with the Faculty of Education and the general membership.

The Mentorship Program Coordinator shall

  • Match-up upper-year students with new students, based on a variety of factors, such as research interest.
  • Organize activities in person or online, social events, career information sessions, preparing for milestones, etc.
  • Attend Executive Meetings and provide updates on the program, propose funding for planned events (as needed).
  • Ensure that the information shared between peers is inclusive of all students and consistent with current graduate office policies.

The Robert Macmillan Symposium in Education (RMSE) Chair shall

  • Oversee and manage the committee organizing the symposium.
  • Liaise with the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and the Research Office to plan the annual research symposium.
  • Manage, organize, and delegate tasks within the RMSE committee.
  • Act as a committee member, completing tasks and supporting committee members in the successful completion of assigned tasks.
  • Provide updates about the progress of RMSE planning at Executive Meetings to keep the Executive Committee informed.

The Indigenous Student Representative shall

  • Ensure that the interests and concerns of Indigenous graduate students are part of the EGSA’s overall mission to foster a supportive and inclusive community of learners in the Faculty of Education.
  • Communicate with the Executive Committee by attending Executive Meetings.
  • Share relevant information with the general membership via official EGSA communication channels.
  • Start initiatives as deemed necessary with the support of the EGSA and/or other Faculty resources.
  • Assist or advise in coordinating programs with other Executive Committee members.

Faculty Committee Representatives

Faculty Committee Representatives, including the Faculty Council (FC) / Graduate Faculty Council (GFC) Representatives, Research Committee Representatives, and Equity Committee Representative, shall

  • Carry out the responsibilities set out in the Faculty of Education Organizational Handbook.
  • Attend assigned Faculty committee meetings regularly.
  • Advocate for graduate student perspectives in discussions and decision-making.
  • Report back to the Executive Committee at Executive Meetings and to the general membership via official EGSA communication channels.
  • Consult with students to ensure accurate representation of concerns.

In addition to the responsibilities set out in the Faculty of Education Organizational Handbook, Faculty Council (FC) / Graduate Faculty Council (GFC) Representatives shall

  • Represent the interests of specific programs.
  • Act as a liaison between students and the Executive Committee.

In addition to the responsibilities set out in the Faculty of Education Organizational Handbook, the Equity Committee Representative shall

  • Promote inclusive practices across EGSA initiatives.
  • Advocate for equity-deserving groups within the graduate student community.

Associate Positions

Associate Positions include roles that connect EGSA to broader institutional or external bodies. Individuals in these roles shall support representation, advocacy, and communication between EGSA and affiliated organizations.

SOGS Councillors shall

  • Attend monthly Council meetings.
  • Vote on issues.
  • Serve as a representative of Education graduate students to the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS).

The PSAC Local 610 Departmental Stewards shall

  • Attend PSAC Local 610 meetings.
  • Serve as the representative of the PSAC Local 610 to Education Graduate Students and Teaching Assistants.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for grievances and other labour issues.
