The Faculty of Education has been ranked fourth, third overall, among Education faculties across Canada.

This is according to the latest annual Maclean’s University Rankings.

What’s also noteworthy is Western Education has moved up seven spots from last year’s report – moving from eleventh to fourth place, third overall.

“I’m incredibly proud of our faculty,” Education dean Donna Kotsopoulos said. “Our success of combining research and practice that brings the best teaching and learning experiences to students in the classroom have been reflected in these rankings.”

The Faculty of Education is also home to five research centres: the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children, the Centre for School Mental Health, the Centre for the Science of Learning, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Research Curriculum as a Social Practice, and The Canadian Research Centre on Inclusive Education.

“We aim to increase societal impact with our research as well as transfer our knowledge to students, professionals, policy makers, and other citizens. The Faculty of Education’s impact is recognized nationally and internationally,” Kotsopoulos said.

The rankings were determined through an online survey where faculty and senior administrators at universities across Canada shared their views. Maclean’s asked them to list up to 10 universities they felt offered the best programs and conducted the best research in their discipline.

800 professors, deans, and chairs at 70 universities responded. Program reputation and research reputation were each weighted at 50 per cent.

Western Education offers a Bachelor of Education degree that provides teacher candidates with the training to become successful educators. In addition, the Faculty offers graduate degrees in research-intensive and professional programs along with Additional Qualification courses for teachers and International Baccalaureate Certificates.

As outlined in its Strategic Plan, the Faculty of Education is guided by the values of excellence, integrity, equity, belonging, kindness, and social justice while having the vision of transforming education and transforming lives.
